Why do we procrastinate? Learn to stop procrastination

Monday, December 8th, 2008

How many times have you avoided cleaning your closet reasoning with yourself about other important tasks that you may have to do or convincing yourself how cleaning is not ‘significant’ enough to be completed at this point in time? Congratulations, for you are procrastinating the task. And hey, welcome to the club. It must be good to hear that you are not the only one. Well, here’s some more good news. There are millions of procrastinators in this world. Now it’s time for the bad part. If not acted upon, then procrastination can very well affect your productivity, your efficiency and even your ability to function normally in your day to day life if it isn’t doing it already.

Just for the record, I put off my visit to the dentist for weeks until the cavity in my tooth became deep enough to leak my brains out of it. It was then, that I decided to tackle the problem rather than brooding over it. What was stopping me from going to the dentist? I have been there several times before this (Yes, I have been gifted with bad dental health). I do not suffer from dentophobia. The answer surprised me to some extent but shocked me into action. It was ‘me’ who was stopping me from doing it. Sounds weird? That’s procrastination for you and most people are guilty of it at some point or the other in their lives. So what exactly is procrastination? What does it mean?

According to the Free Dictionary, Procrastination is the habit of delaying a task needlessly out of carelessness or laziness. So, which of these two best describe you? Are you lazy or are you plain careless? But wait; there might be more to it than the technical definition. Experts suggest that procrastination may either be a psychological problem or a physiological one. There are myriad psychological factors like anxiety, ADHD or even perfectionism that may lead to procrastination.

The common symptoms

A procrastinator often spends up more energy in putting off a task than what he/she would have spent in completing it. The mind gives them constant reminders about the task and the person will try his/her best to put the thoughts away, often eating up one’s own positive energy resource. Such thoughts can not only be an energy drainer but can also weigh down heavily on the confidence of a person. In simple terms, procrastination is nothing but self sabotage.

Types of procrastinators

Here’s some more juicy insight. There are different types of procrastinators. The first category is relaxed procrastinators and the second is tense-afraid procrastinators. I think the names are pretty self explanatory. But here’s a detailed description.

 • A tense-afraid procrastinator will usually avoid a task because he/she is too tensed to handle the stress that the task may bring about. At times, he/she is confused about the importance of the task and is unable to prioritize the tasks in life. In most cases, this leads to further procrastination. For example, studying for an examination. He/she will be too worried about not being able to complete the studies and will in turn make frequent trips to the washroom, drink coffee and end up delaying the actual task further.
 • The relaxed procrastinator on the other hand, avoids a task only because he/she doesn’t care. They focus their energies on other more enjoyable tasks. A prime example in teens is when they procrastinate their studies but do not do the same with their social lives. It’s just a matter of diverting the energy within the body to something more enjoyable.

So how do we avoid it?

Let me go straight to the point without getting into too many technical details.

 1. Admit the fact that you are procrastinating: Yes, the most important step is to accept this fact and then work towards avoiding it. In most cases, we know that we are procrastinating but we keep doing it nevertheless and the situation often gets out of hand.
 2. Create a list of ‘to do’ things: Write down a list of all the things that you have been procrastinating and create deadlines for each one of them. Deadlines have to be realistic (something that you can achieve).
 3. Prioritize the list: Not all the tasks that you have written down must be equally important. Prioritize that list now. List the most important tasks first and the less important ones later.
 4. Start working on them: Go slow and steady. But ensure that you complete each task and then cancel it out with a stroke on the paper. Keep it where you can see it frequently for it gives you immense satisfaction to see that you have completed the tasks which you have been delaying for so long.
 5. Reward yourself: Take time and indulge in something that you absolutely love. Consider this to be your reward for completing those tasks.
 6. Stick to the ‘write and complete’ schedule: Procrastination is like a stubborn weed. It will keep coming back at you. So get that writing pad and pen and write down whenever you feel that you are procrastinating a task.

This seems like a relatively simple solution to a seemingly complex problem. But you might just be surprised at the effectiveness of these techniques. With time and confidence, you should be able to eliminate it completely from your life.

Why it is extremely difficult to become a millionaire with your blog

Monday, December 8th, 2008

You have probably seen those rags-to-riches blog stories on the internet. A young guy in his late twenties has this huge multi million dollar blogging empire that almost runs on auto-pilot while he chills away in the Caribbean on his private yacht with his Ferrari in tow. Sounds too good to be true? This was precisely what I thought when I first came across such a blog. Apart from the usual ‘I can teach you how to do this for only $xx’ bit, there were also scanned images of Google ad sense cheques that he had received in the last couple of years. Sometimes, the amounts were as high as $5000 a month. Almost immediately, the question propped up in my mind. Can you earn that much in a month only using Google ad sense? I struggle with my ad sense revenues and they are mostly in the 0.2 cents per day range. Are those images doctored and those figures highly inflated? Not really, for there are people who earn more than $4000 a month only by blogging from home. Can an average person like you or me do it? That’s a different question altogether.

The content

If you have decided to be a blogger or already tried and failed at it, then it is probably because you didn’t plan it in advance. What kind of blog do you plan to start? There are several styles of blogging. There is the weekly blog that updates once in a week with interesting content to keep the readers going for one week and there is the daily blog which is updated on a daily basis. Consider it like the diary that you maintained as a kid. There is never a dearth of subjects and topics to write about in your blog. A good writer can weave an interesting story around just about any ordinary event of the day. Whereas a bad writer can have an encounter with a seemingly extinct saber tooth tiger in the dense forests of Peru and yet weave a dull lack luster story out of it. You can also start an issue oriented blog. These blogs focus on certain issues or a set of related topics. Whatever you blog about, it is important to maintain a certain level of interactivity in your language and to keep your readers updated. A lot of people aren’t able to do it. They feel that there is nothing interesting happening in their life on a daily basis. But then, it doesn’t have to be interesting. You have to make it interesting and as a writer, you should possess those skills. Readers are the only thing that can make your blog popular and fresh interesting content is the only way to get readers in. Remember, a stale blog is like a four hour silent movie. It won’t find many takers.

Marketing your blog

You cannot expect people to drop in and find your blog just like that. You have to ensure that your blog reaches out to people and in order to do this, you have to market it. Now there are a thousand different ways to market your blog and there is loads of information online on how to do it. However, most people are unable to do it, because it isn’t as easy as it is made out to be. I have tried to market my blog before and failed miserably at it. The people who have met success with their blogs have either mastered the art of marketing or have hired experts to do it. And online marketing services do not come cheap. You must be willing to put in at least 8 to 10 hours of your day every day marketing your blog if you intent to hit four figure income levels each month with it.

Trial and Error

There are several ways of monetizing blogs using advertising. But it doesn’t come that easily. Apart from readership which is the key, there is a lot of trial and error involved. The placement of the advertisements, the type of advertisements, the frequency of advertisements on a page, the way they are presented, hidden advertisements, the quality of advertisements, they all matter when it comes to getting returns. But it takes months and even years to perfect this and have a steady stream of income from your blog.

The conclusion

Do not get carried away by those rags to riches stories and get disappointed when you cannot duplicate that kind of success. Success with blogging will happen eventually if you possess good writing skills, are willing to invest the time and work to promote it. It might take slightly longer than you imagined. It also depends on how you define success. But you certainly can make about $2 to 3k a month, in about a year from the day you start blogging. Follow the rules. Update regularly and watch the money flow in.

Why most people are unable to learn the guitar: 5 Don’ts while learning Guitar

Monday, December 8th, 2008

You are on a weekend getaway with your friends and it’s time for some music. One of your friends has brought his acoustic guitar along and he starts to play it. Almost instantly, the evening comes alive, the atmosphere is magical. His fingers move faster on the fret board than yours move on the computer keyboard. He is the toast of the evening and clearly steals the show. You, on the contrary are left wondering, ‘Only if I could learn to play like that.’ The question is ‘Why can’t you play like that?’ What does it take to play the guitar? Does it require extremely fast fingers? Or maybe a musical ear is what you need. Is your friend gifted with some special powers that the ‘guitar genie’ from the lamp bestowed upon him? Not really. The fact is that just about anyone including you can play the guitar provided you are willing to put in the time and the effort. However, the reason most people are unable to do it is because they pick one of the ‘five golden don’ts’ of guitar learning. These are mistakes that almost every one of us can make and yet, they can very well end your aspirations to be a good guitarist. Wouldn’t you like to know what they are?

Number 1: Trying to self learn: Are you bitten by the do it yourself bug? I love the do-it-yourself bit too. But there are certain things that require the special and skilled hands of a teacher and the guitar is one of those things. There have been and will be self learners. But these are the naturally ‘gifted’ guys or girls that we spoke about earlier. For the rest, there is the safer and saner option of finding a tutor. All the literature floating around the internet cannot replace a good guitar tutor. So, if you have been dabbling with the thought of self learning, then drop it and find a tutor unless you are gifted of course.

Number 2: Trying to learn too fast: I must have heard this a million times. ‘I want to learn fast.’ Now why would you want to do that unless you have a trip to mars coming up in the next couple of months? If you feel that the guitar doesnt deserve too much time or is as unimportant, then you shouldnt be learning it in the first place. And thanks to the demand for ‘fast learning’ courses, there are hundreds and thousands of websites and books that are dedicated to such learning techniques. ‘Learn to play the guitar in 7 days’, ‘Learn to play basic guitar tabs in 3 days’. Why I have even seen the extreme in which you can learn to play the guitar in two hours! Absurd is the word to best describe such courses and websites. Do yourself a favor, stay away from them. Go slow, go steady and you will win the race.

Number Three: Lack of Practice: The guitar is an instrument that requires immense patience and resilience in order to master. If you learn a new lesson, then it must be practiced ‘at least’ once everyday until you can play it blindfolded. This is the technique that I successfully used. I have seen people practicing the guitar once a week. Believe me, you are going to find it very difficult to learn it if you practice in that frequency. Another common problem is that people only practice what they are good at, easily avoiding the rest. The reason is very simple. If you are good at something, then it obviously sounds good when you practice. But you are limiting your progress by avoiding the difficult parts. So start practicing the worst part before anything else. Slowly, you will learn to play it with equal ease.

Number Four: Jumping to chords: Another trait that is commonly seen in the ‘fast learners’. Chords are the mainstay of guitar music. Yes, they certainly are very alluring. But most people want to jump to chords and start playing songs as soon as they start to learn the guitar. This is extremely difficult, almost impossible. You have to master playing the scales first. Not only will the scales help you to build a musical ear, but it will also help you to spread out your fingers. Finger exercises are an extremely important part of building a strong foundation. And yeah, don’t forget to use that lil pinky.

Number Five: Give up too soon: You are going to be miserable at it for the first 5 to 6 months. Admit this fact and get along with it. It is human to produce those dead sounds at first while learning to play. But do not give up. You have to stick to it. Most people quit when they are nearly there. It’s up to you whether you want to make it or quit midway. It’s different strokes for different blokes. Do not be flabbergasted if your friend is learning faster than you are. Work hard, keep practicing and you will definitely be a good guitarist one day.

The worst reasons for not hiring a freelance content writer

Monday, December 8th, 2008

So are you all set to enter the 24×7 global marketplace called the internet with your own website or websites? Well, then you have just begun a journey on a path that has a few too many hurdles but also loads of rewards. Have you ever played an arcade video game before? Consider your journey on the internet to be like that. The kind of people you have on your team will determine whether you find your goal or lose in between. A lot of people enter the World Wide Web with a notion that website design is the key to success. They hire the most expensive web design team and design the most spectacular looking website. But, a mere good looking website is like a Bugatti Veyron without fuel. Yes, there was a time when the web design was one of the most if not the most crucial aspect of an online business. In fact it still is very important. But there are other equally important factors that have come into the picture. So, simply hiring the best design team is not sufficient. You need to have an equally efficient content team on board. Yes, quality content is the mainstay of any successful website on the internet today.

It is very easy to find a good quality writer for your work. There are thousands of freelancer websites where you can easily hire a freelance content writer. But not everyone is comfortable with this thought. I have seen some of the most absurd reasons being quoted for not hiring a freelance content writer. The very word freelance in the term, causes jitters in the minds of many a people. They tend to associate the word freelance with inefficient. But if that were the case, then more than half of the web based content that you see would not be up to the snuff.

 1. I don’t have that kind of a budget.” This statement would have made sense if you were planning to hire a professional copywriter. Professional copywriters charge on an hourly basis and the charges can be as high as $50 per hour depending on their popularity on the web. Others charge as per page and the charge is no less than $50 to $100. So let’s suppose that you have a requirement for 1000 articles for all your websites. Do you have an idea of what it will cost you eventually? Not all businesses have that kind of a budget. On the other hand, the best freelance content writer will charge you as less as $10 to $20 per page. While you can get inexperienced college students who create fairly good content copy for as less as $3 per page.
 2. I’d rather hire a full time writer for the company“. Now why would you want to make such an investment and commitment when you can get the same benefits without them? Freelance content writers are all about flexibility. There is no long term commitment. You part ways after the work is done. Isn’t that much more flexible?
 3. Words don’t sell my product. It sells on its own“. Does that sound like you? Well, here’s a reminder that you are not competing with your neighborhood grocery store over here. It’s a global marketplace, the World Wide Web and for you to be heard and seen, you need to shout out loud and words are the only way that it can be done.
 4. My sales rep speaks pretty good English language and I think he can write the copy for my website.” Speaking English is very different from creating compelling copy. My hair dresser speaks very good English. Does that mean that I can hire him for writing content or copy? No, not everyone has a way with words. Besides, if your sales rep is going to write the content, then who is going to do the selling? Is it your accountant? Not everyone can multitask.
 5. How am I supposed to work with someone who is sitting in another corner of the globe?” Technology had advanced and today, classroom sessions, boardroom meetings, product demonstrations are held successfully over the internet with parties in diverse corners of the globe. In case of a freelance content writer all that you have to do is give the writer a product briefing and project requirements if any. You will have 4 to 5 articles in your email inbox awaiting your review by the time you have your dinner in the evening. If that isn’t comfortable then pinch me hard, maybe I am in dreamland.

A few tips for writing the right content

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Getting loads of traffic to your website is one thing and getting traffic that converts into loads of business is another. I am sure you are looking for the later. Every web user who reaches your website via a search engine is looking for something. It might be a product or just information regarding it. Now, if you are successful in providing the user what he wanted within the first few minutes of him landing on your website, then chances are that you have got yourself a loyal visitor who will return or in some cases, a customer who will give you business. Either ways, the content on your website plays a very important role in making the user feel comfortable and like your website. Spare a moment to think about the websites that you frequently visit on the internet. What makes you visit those websites again and again? Ease of use, quality tutorials, helpful links and quality information are some of the factors. So you see, compelling content goes a long way in making or breaking your website.

Write the right content

The user should be able to find the content easily. In other words, it should be rich in keywords or keyword phrases. If you are a freelance copywriter and have a website that doesn’t use the words ‘freelance copywriter‘ anywhere, then the chances that search engines will list you are highly unlikely. Secondly, the content on your website must be evergreen. In other words it must not be outdated. I have seen many websites on the internet with content that dates back to 2003. No wonder they are languishing at the bottom of the SERPS. The mere thought of going online with such content is scary. Other than this, it is very important that the user is able to find what he wants using minimum number of clicks. You can try this out yourself. Log on to the main page of your website and then try to find your way through and keep a track of the number of clicks it takes you. Anything that takes more than 4 clicks of the mouse is placed too deep in the website. Chances are that the user will close the website and opt for another one. And remember there is no dearth of competition online.

Present it to the user

Patience is a very rare virtue on the internet and web users are the perfect example of this. They do not have the time or patience to read through every webpage on the internet. They will simply scan through the page looking for interesting lines or phrases that may prove to be helpful. So ensure that the content is split into small scanable paragraphs with interesting headings. This way, the user can easily scan through the whole page. If I have managed to get you to read this article till this point, then I have been fairly successful in writing a readable as well as a scanable article. And take a look at the words that are highlighted in bold. These are keywords or keyword phrases.

Let’s sum it all up once again.

 1. Quality updated content
 2. Short and sweet sentences
 3. Broken up into paragraphs
 4. Smart headings and titles
 5. Easy to find and scan through
 6. Keywords in the right density

So you see, I have tried to write an informative article with keywords and the keyword density is also acceptable. This is a perfect example of SEO content.
